National Climate Action Conference 2024

Karachi, Pakistan – February 29, 2024 – The Global Compact Network Pakistan (GCNP) successfully organized the National Climate Action Conference in Karachi, a high-profile event aimed at addressing climate resilience and sustainability in the business sector. Industry leaders, policymakers, environmentalists, and experts converged to explore innovative strategies and solutions to combat climate change and foster sustainable development.

The Conference brought together a diverse array of stakeholders to delve into climate-resilient actions essential for sustaining businesses amidst environmental challenges. Key objectives included driving progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), managing global shocks, and fostering partnerships to secure a resilient and sustainable future.

As Chief Guest Ms. Simi Kamal, Chairperson of Hisaar Foundation, delivered a poignant address highlighting the urgent need to integrate water sustainability into Pakistan’s climate discourse. Ms. Kamal addressed various facets of the climate discourse, including carbon emissions, renewable energy, and circular economy approaches. Importantly, she shed light on the often-overlooked aspect of reducing the water footprint, citing devastating consequences such as floods, melting glaciers, and waterlogging.

Looking ahead, Ms. Kamal called for a holistic approach for recognizing water as Pakistan’s lifeline and urged stakeholders to prioritize water rights and equitable distribution, addressing colonial legacies and inequalities in water access. She emphasized the importance of building pride in Pakistan’s natural resources, fostering a culture of sustainability within industries, and implementing nature-based solutions and responsible water management as cornerstones of Pakistan’s development agenda.

Mr Khalid Junejo, Executive Director, Global Compact Network Pakistan in his welcome address highlighted Pakistan’s vulnerability to global challenges including action on climate change. He emphasized the urgent need for decisive action, commending business leaders for their efforts in driving transformative change. With Global Compact Network Pakistan facilitating awareness and breakthroughs, he urged collective action for sustainable results. Looking ahead to 2024, he stressed the importance of businesses preparing for climate-related legislation and adopting circular business models, aligning with the UN Global Compact’s Forward Faster initiative. He called for ambition and bravery in initiatives to address pressing issues.

Ms. Yulia Bazhenova, representing GIZ Germany, underscored GIZ’s commitment to climate resilience in Pakistan, highlighting key initiatives and achievements in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable energy access.

Mr. Kamal Shahryar, Advisor TDAP, addressed critical topics such as flood management, sustainable product development, and regulations for sustainable textiles, stressing the importance of responsible corporate behavior and sustainable value chains.

Ms. Farheen Zahoor, Head of Strategy ESG & Sustainability, AGI Denim shed light on the European Green Deal and German Due Diligence Legislation’s impact on Pakistan’s export sector, urging swift adoption of greener production methods to maintain competitiveness.

A vibrant panel discussion featuring industry leaders further enriched the discourse, exploring themes such as climate change mitigation, eco-friendly product development, and disaster management readiness. Insights shared during the session underscored the urgency for collaborative action towards sustainable development and disaster resilience. Panelists include Ms. Lizzie Kroeze, Director of Product Development and Marketing, Artistic Garment Industries (AGI Denim), Mr. Mustafa Diwan, Director of Operations and Marketing, Gatron (Industries) Ltd, Mr. Shayan Akberali, Chief Executive Officer, Amreli Steels, and Mr. Imdad Hussain, Director (Operations), Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

The event concluded with the presentation of GCNP Recognition Plaques to panelists and speakers in acknowledgment of their invaluable contributions.
