The meeting provided a relevant platform to reflect on the Networkโ€™s collective progress and strengthened our shared commitment to responsible business practices.

On 9 December, the world marks International Anti-Corruption Day, highlighting the importance of integrity, transparency, and accountability. This yearโ€™s focus, โ€œ๐”๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก ๐€๐ ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ ๐‚๐จ๐ซ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง,โ€ recognizes the role of young people in shaping fairer societies.

To mark the day,ย Global Compact Network Pakistanย &ย Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN), in collaboration with Bahria University Karachi, hosted an interactive session with students on the maritime industry, a key driver of Pakistanโ€™s trade and economy, where ethical practices are essential.
The discussion highlighted how youth can support MACNโ€™s collective action efforts to strengthen integrity and accountability across the maritime sector.

Global Compact Network Pakistan (GCNP) and Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) Denmark organized the National Maritime Conference on February 28, 2024, at Pearl Continental Hotel Karachi.

This groundbreaking event brought together key stakeholders from various sectors including the business community, All Pakistan Shipping Association, Shipping Agents Association, Terminal Operators, Off Dock Terminals, Stevedores Association, Freight Forwarders Association, Customs Agents, Bonded Carriers, Shipbreaking Industry, Karachi Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Federation of Chambers and Commerce, International Chambers of Commerce, Hosiery Manufacturers, Readymade Garments, Towel Manufacturers, and other organizations.

Participants engaged in insightful discussions on legislative reforms and sectoral changes aimed at saving the country billions of dollars annually. Director General of the Ports and Shipping Department, Alia Shahid, along with representatives from Pakistan Customs, Mercantile Marine Department, Pakistan Single Window, and the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce shared their views, emphasizing the importance of sustainable growth and the development of the maritime sector.

GLOBAL COMPACT NETWORK PAKISTAN EMPHASISES UPON INTEGRATED EFFORTS BY STAKEHOLDERS TO ADDRESS ISSUES OF CORRUPTION IN MARITIME INDUSTRY

(Karachi – 28th December 2022): โ€œTransparency, responsibility, accountability and responsiveness are the four indicators put at the other end of the continuum from corruption to governance which can help address issues of corruption in Maritime Industryโ€, this was stated by Ms. Alia Shahid, Director General Ports and Shipping who was speaking as the Chief Guest at the Consultative Meeting on Collective Action against Corrupt Practices in Maritime Industry organized by Global Compact Network Pakistan in collaboration with Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN). She further added that massive reforms were underway in improving the regulatory framework, particularly laws relating to seafarers, survey inspection, registration and other issues.

Mr. Wajid Ali, Director General Pakistan Customs Academy in his remarks as Guest of Honour on the occasion stated that Transparency, openness and communication coupled with digitalization and IT initiatives have gone a long way in improving corrupt practices in customs handling. He appreciated the efforts of Global Compact Network Pakistan and MACN in taking up the challenge of collective action by bringing the stakeholders together and working with them to address the challenges and barriers in the way of addressing issues of corruption. He assured that the services of the academy would always be available for supporting the noble cause.
